Q1: Why did Nursery Story choose to fundraise for Children 1st?
Children 1st is Scotland’s National Children’s Charity and is a cause close to our hearts, as they support the country’s most vulnerable children and their families. 88p in every £1 raised pays for practical advice, therapies and support to help children look forward to a better future.
Q2: Wow, it’s great news to hear that Dolly Parton’s teamed up with Children 1st; tell us more!
A love of reading is one of life’s essential building blocks, but not all children have access to books. Dolly Parton founded the Imagination Library to inspire the love of reading in children. Every month, every child enrolled with the Imagination Library programme receives a new book appropriate to their age – completely free! Stories and rhymes, old favourites and new releases, with books by the best children’s authors and illustrators, there’s something for everyone!
Q3: Why is reading with under 5s so important?
Under the age of five, a child soaks up knowledge, experiences and emotions faster than at any other time and reading with under 5s can make a massive difference to their development.
Reading stories is not only fun and enjoyable, but it also improves language, vocabulary and communication skills. Sharing the love of reading is a fantastic way to bond with your child.
Q4: How can communities in the UK get involved with Dolly Parton Imagination Library?
If your community isn’t already involved with the Imagination Library, you can become a Local Imagination Library Champion. It costs around £25 a year to provide a year’s books for one child. As well as fundraising yourself, you might seek financial support from individual donors and partners such as your local authority, churches, children’s centres and associations such as Lions or Rotary.
Q5: We’d love to support and donate – what’s the best way to do this?
It’s easy to gift the magic of reading to every child. You can donate on the Nursery Story page for Children 1st and follow the link to Just Giving.
Q6: Any tips to encourage the under 5s to develop a love of reading?
- Make reading with your child part of your everyday routine: just ten minutes a day has a significant impact on your child’s development.
- Teach your child to enjoy reading anywhere, any time, so carry a book with you when you’re out and about.
- Switch off screens, phones and the TV to avoid distractions, cuddle up together and make storytime extra special.
- You don’t always have to read all the words: you could ask questions, point to colours, objects, animals etc. and talk about the story together.
